How To Draw Ears On A Face

The hardest office of nailing down a confront is using the right proportions. Once you go that part, drawing faces will be piece of cake peasy!

For me, the hardest part was always drawing the eyes in the correct size and right place. We look at drawings or photos and it looks then easy, but then, when information technology'south our turn, everything is 10x harder.

Like in everything, it all comes down to exercise. Start with shapes, acquire the proportions.

Practice this a few times and, yous'll meet that, shortly, drawing just the head will be as easy every bit tying your own shoes!

Learn how to Draw a Face by working with the right proportions! Here's a step by step guide.

Of form, I'm going to help you out and give yous a stride-by-step procedure on how to draw a confront. From Basic Shapes and each feature of the face up, similar the optics, nose, mouth, etc. Adding details, young and old faces and even cartoon the face in unlike views!

Buckle upwardly and get your sketchbook ready. We're doing this!

What You Need To Know Well-nigh Drawing Faces

It's all about the shapes. Everything in a drawing is almost shapes.

You await at a face as its whole. Simply I'll wait at it and I'll try to effigy out into what shapes tin I put it downward, so I tin can easily draw it.

Circles, squares, rectangles and guidelines, a puzzle for me to figure out.

Like I said, we're going through a step by footstep guide for each feature of the face up.

I'k going to show you lot the process I use when learning to describe new things and hopefully, it will be virtually useful to you lot!

You can do this with whatever medium yous'd prefer.

Either with a sketchbook along with some pencils or even pens or grab your drawing tablet and pc. Anything will piece of work, you lot only need to come along with your motivation and beginning.

Bones Face up Proportions

Generally speaking, nosotros're dividing the confront into 3 equal parts.

Later drawing our main shapes of the head, nosotros demand to be sure that everything will be in the right places.

For this, there are 3 principal spaces you might want to add together:

  • one goes from the hairline to our brow
  • some other from the brow to the nose
  • and finally, nose to chin

This might sound confusing, just here'south an case:

Here are the basic proportions that you need to know when drawing a face!

At present, all nosotros are missing is where our eyes, ears, and oral fissure will be.

Only we'll get there in a second, so follow me and we'll build up our head and face up, ane step at a time!

Either way, before we begin:

Do your hand stretches, organize your workspace, bring some water and snacks if you wish to. The class volition brainstorm shortly!

Draw The Basic Shapes

Alright, let'southward showtime very elementary.

On your page, describe a circle. If you find it hard to describe a perfect circle, here'south a tip: draw a horizontal and vertical line, perpendicular to each other, crossing at the eye.

If you lot prefer, use a ruler. But I'd say to do this without it. Your lines don't demand to exist 100% perfect and equally yous practice, you'll run across that they'll become better with time.

Now that yous have your lines, draw the circle around them.

Alternatively, you can just practise a few circles on your page until y'all get the hang of information technology. Start with smaller circles and increase their size as you go.

Start by drawing a circle when drawing a face.

Now the next step is to depict a foursquare inside our circumvolve.

This might audio weird, but this square will determine the width of our face.

We're doing a pretty default face at the moment, but after on, we'll talk about how you can use your shapes, to draw dissimilar faces!

Alright, half of our head is done, now we demand to find our chin.

Depict a vertical line, post-obit the one you lot did for the circle, going downward, with the same distance as the upper half of the face up.

Where the line ends, that'due south where our chin will be!

Draw a square inside the face to know where the jaw is.

Now, all we need is to connect the points and nosotros have our caput done. Adjacent all we need to add together is our guidelines for all the features.

Pretty simple right?

Now you only need to do this shapes and, gradually, yous'll start losing some guidelines, because you lot don't need them anymore. Intuitively yous'll already know where everything is!

Describe The Eyes and Eyebrows

It'due south time to start adding features to our face.

Allow's start from peak to lesser.

Our quest now is to notice where our eyes and eyebrows will be. Permit'due south take a wait at what we accept so far.

Now, for the eyebrows, our line is already there. Our brow line is where we'll draw the eyebrows.

For the eyes, there isn't much for u.s. to practice here either.

Go a scrap below the eyebrows and make a new line, this is where the eyes volition be.

Set a line for the Eyebrows and the Eyes right below.

The Eyes

To help you on their location, we can add some guidelines here equally well.

Remember that square nosotros drew at the beginning? Allow's divide each one-half of the square in two.

2 vertical lines, going downward. These lines determine the middle of each eye.

Now, all nosotros need to do is to add our eye shapes in their places.

Either an oval and almond shape will work. Come across what works best for you.

Here's how you find the position of the eyes when drawing a face

Our adjacent footstep is to make full our eyes.

Add together the student and iris, the upper eyelid and some eyelashes if you wish!

Draw the eyes on the face, simple shapes!

You tin can practice these as stylized as you want or keep it very simple.

More cartoonish or more realistic. Attempt out different things and experiment!

While you're learning and improving your faces, you're also developing your ain way and discovering what and how you like to draw!

The Eyebrows

The eyebrows tin be very unproblematic or full of detail.

It all comes down to your taste and mode. I tend to describe my eyebrows with a single line. But, if you prefer, you can draw them, hair past hair.

So, of course, you can go with several styles, from very tiny to very thick and bushy eyebrows.

You can draw the eyebrows very simply or with lots of details, totally up to you.

As their place, nosotros draw them right above the eyes, the line resting there is our guideline.

They tin get a chip further than the optics, but the starting indicate is the same.

Usually, I start from inside the confront, I feel that it's easier to go from there.

We describe an arched line, turn information technology effectually and nosotros close our shape where we began. Call up that the eyebrows are thicker on the inside and go thinner on the ends of information technology.

Here's the position of the eyebrow in the face, just above the eye.

Lovely, the face is starting to look not bad!

Draw The Nose

Next in the list is the nose.

Nosotros already know where information technology ends, our 2nd guideline, after the forehead. But where does it begin?

Don't worry, we don't need to add more lines… yet! Our olfactory organ starts at the same line as our eyebrows.

As for its width, it will go every bit far equally the starting betoken of our eyes. Allow'due south do some base shapes first:

Drawing the nose is easy! Here's how you can do it.

Now we just demand to sketch out our nose.

There's a variety of styles you can go almost here. I cover, in a video, the main ones you can do, and then if you're interested, bank check out my Figure Cartoon grade on Gumroad!

As for the size of the nose, these are just guidelines, feel free to exaggerate your noses or optics equally y'all wish. Specially if you lot're doing a more cartoonish style!

Sketch the nose in your face drawing.

Draw The Mouth

Nosotros're almost washed!

For the mouth, we don't have whatsoever guideline yet, so let's start with that.

Find the middle point betwixt the nose line and the mentum. Now depict a horizontal line.

We found our oral fissure!

Draw a line halfway from the nose and the chin to find the mouth!

Now above this line, nosotros'll have our upper lip and beneath, the lesser lip.

Over again, at that place are several types of lips, thinner or thicker, long lips or very pocket-sized. But the default shapes are an M shape for the upper lip and an arch for the bottom.

Like this:

The upper lip of the mouth has an M shape, like this.

Again, attempt out different styles and shapes.

Experimenting is always the best part of drawing, and then take fun with it!

Draw The Ears

We've reached the final stride of drawing the face.

All we are missing at present is the ears!

I admit, drawing ears in a front view isn't the most entertaining, simply it is also very simple.

As for their location, very easy besides: draw an oval shape, starting in our optics line, its highest bespeak rests on the forehead line and lowest bespeak on the nose line.

The ears are easy to locate when drawing the face, here's how.

And there it is, 90% of our ear is down. Now we only need to add some details, generally curves here and there:

Feel free to try out different styles and ways to draw the features.

Well done! That's a good looking face.

Adding Details And Crumbling

Now that you know how to draw a complete face, we can add together some details!

Depending on whether you're cartoon a younger character or older, the face will expect different.

An crumbling face will have some wrinkles for case!

Apart from that, there are other details you can add to give more personality to your character: moles, nascency signs, freckles, scars, amid others.

If you're cartoon male person characters, there's another addition for you: beards!

There are dozens of styles to go for: long, short, different designs, mustache only, beards only or a mix of both!

Details Tin can Make or Break Your Character

Don't overdo it though!

Details are squeamish, but yous tin't easily use everything in one grapheme. It tin can be too messy and confusing. Besides, the point of adding some details is and then that people will recognize your graphic symbol through unique details.

If you're unsure on how to get almost your characters, try out different versions. Effort out several things and see what you think works best with their personality.

Once you lot've called how your character will look, draw them in unlike poses, locations, deportment and test them, so y'all're certain that's the await you want!

Cartoon Erstwhile Faces

As I said before, if y'all want to draw someone older, y'all might want to add some wrinkles and even dissimilar colored spots and signs over the face.

Every bit nosotros age, our peel changes. Use photograph references if needed!

The most common wrinkles will show on the eyes and around the oral cavity.

When drawing old faces, remember to add wrinkles and to use photo references to help you!

But, in one case once again, feel gratuitous to exaggerate your lines! Fifty-fifty in real life, people age differently and will look different!

Cartoon Immature Faces

For young people, well there are several stages and there's a lot to play with!

Permit'due south say you want to depict a baby or a child. Usually, we get for really round shapes, the youngest, the chubbiest!

Play with those shapes as much as you want.

Once again, wait up some reference images and draw from them.

As for moles or freckles, those tend to appear a flake subsequently.

The aforementioned goes for wrinkles, except, if you're going for a very stubby baby, and then you can add some lines on the forehead and very round cheeks.

For young faces like Babies, draw rounder faces with bigger eyes!

Children are a mix of babies and teens.

There's less roundness to their faces, only it's still in that location.

When drawing both babies and children, we also tend to draw very big eyes, nigh too large. It makes them wait cuter and children's eyes expect ever a bit bigger than when we're older and very vibrant.

Look for this kind of details on photographs from when you were a child, for instance. Take reward of these little features and exaggerate them in your drawings!

Every bit for scars, well it's something you can start calculation when cartoon both children and teens.

If your graphic symbol is the adventurer and energetic type, then perchance a scar or other would fit. I for certain know some people where their scar'due south stories begin with "When I was a child…" and finish with "And that's how I got this 1!"

Teens can be really fun as well.

This is when the terrible acne starts to appear! You can add some pimples if yous think it fits your graphic symbol.

On some other annotation: beards! At a certain historic period, boys start growing facial hair, so you tin starting time playing with this idea equally well by giving them small-scale stubbles or random tiny hairs.

Experimenting With Shapes

Alright, and so like I said before, we drew our face in a very default way.

Those are the proportions you desire to go when drawing a realistic portrait. But if you're interested and going for a more cartoonish arroyo, you can go across these proportions!

Exaggerate the sizes of each feature and try out different face shapes. Basically, the only thing that usually doesn't change is the position of each feature. Unless you're going for a Picasso arroyo of grade!

Endeavor different shapes, a triangle for example!

Instead of a circle and foursquare, try to use a triangle. Either upwards or upside downward. Encounter the results that you get! A triangle volition probably give you a more extravaganza style and a more elongated face.

If you really desire to play with a very long confront, effort a rectangle or a very long triangle!

What about a pentagon? Either upright or inverted.

This one tin requite usa very interesting face up shapes.

Take the time to pracitce different head shapes. Each shape can lead to very interesting new characters!

You already accept your bases and at present how to exercise a face.

At present information technology's time to experiment and try out different formats.

Is your character a very sturdy man, perhaps a boxer? Then draw a very square face.

Are you drawing someone with a very big abdomen? Then describe a very round face to match!

There are thousands of options and you lot are free to try whatever you like!

If you don't like the upshot, try again or become with another shape. You acquire with these experiences and not only you're learning different approaches when drawing, you lot're also improving your cartoon skills.

So, continue practicing and accept fun with your characters!

Drawing Faces At Unlike Angles

We've washed our face in a front view, but yous might want to describe your characters in other positions. Particularly if y'all want to make a turn effectually sheet of your character!

Worry non, for I will not go out you hanging!

Let'due south become through a few more tutorials on how to depict faces in different angles.

Side View

Our first shape here volition be the aforementioned as before. Nosotros start with a circle!

Again, if you wish, depict two lines, crossing each other in the middle and then connect everything together. Really, I'd say to draw your circle similar this, because you'll need them later.

They are very important guidelines!

To draw the face from the side, we start with a circle as well.

Alright, then we have one-half of our head done. Now, from the lesser of our vertical line, we depict an oblique line, like so:

Drawing a face to the side means the jaw will be a slanted or oblique line.

This is our chin and jawline!

Finally, nosotros simply need to close this shape. From the edge of our circle, on the correct side, describe a vertical line until it touches the line we but did.

Connect the jaw line with the circle to draw the front of the face.

Our master shapes are done.

Now it'due south fourth dimension to start finding where each feature of the confront is!

This time, we're starting from the bottom. Simply before that, remember how nosotros divided the caput into iii equal parts before? Permit's do the same here!

Here are the general dimensions of the face when seen from the side

At present that's done, from the point where our jawline starts, let'due south draw a horizontal line.

This is where our mouth volition be! At the edge of our head.

Like last fourth dimension, the upper lip should exist in a higher place this line and the bottom lip, below.

Usually, the upper lip also goes a bit forrad than the bottom lip. But again, it all depends on how you desire your grapheme to be!

Start sketching the jaw and mouth, pretty simply!

Next, is the nose.

Nosotros already have our line hither, where the end of the nose volition sit. To help y'all, earlier detailing and drawing a finished nose, draw a triangle, going out of the head.

This is where your nose should become.

The nose looks like a triangle when being drawn from the side.

Before drawing the eyes, permit'southward do the ears commencement.

Since nosotros're seeing the head from just one side, we can only see ane ear. Like earlier, the lowest part of the ear will seat on the guideline we did for the nose and the highest part touches the brow line.

This time we can also see more details of the ear.

I usually go for a very simple ear, merely feel gratis to add all the curves that y'all encounter on your ear!

When drawing the ears from the side, remember to add some details!

Every bit for the optics, we can besides see but ane of them and its shape will too be very different than before. Its placement is the same as before, the central horizontal line on our circle!

For its shape, instead of a circumvolve or almond shape, nosotros draw a cone.

Now we simply need to add details like the student, iris, eyelashes and a flake of the upper eyelid.

The eyes have a cone shade when drawing a face from the side.

We're almost done and this last part is rather simple!

We merely need to add our eyebrow.

We already have a place for information technology and now we just need to describe an arched line, a bit more tilted in the front and nosotros're washed!

The eyebrow can once again be as simple or as complex as you want.

three/four View

This ane is usually the one that virtually people have difficulty with. This is why I did a whole section with 10 videos on my figure cartoon grade, just for drawing a complete head in a 3/4 view!

A role of the face is hidden, simply non completely, so getting the proportions right can be difficult.

Let'south start with our circle!

And so far, we've always been drawing straight lines, this time we need a curved one. From the top of the circle, going all the way down.

Drawing a Face or Head in a three quarters view can be somewhat complicated, so let me guide you step by step!

At present, to brand things a scrap easier, let's describe a rectangle, starting from the hairline, down to the olfactory organ.

This way we have almost a consummate shape of our head, plus two of our primary guidelines!

Draw a rectangle on the head to make it easier to find the features of the face.

Now, nosotros need to add together our chin line, so from the nose line, become downwardly the same distance as y'all have from the brow to the nose.

Finally, nosotros just need to connect the dots!

Add the chin line to your three quarters view of the face.

Time to fill everything upwards!

Starting with the eyebrows, everything has a flake of a 3D feel correct now, so it's like we accept arched guidelines. One of the eyebrows is completely seen, while the other is cutting.

The shapes are the same as before though!

start working the main lines of the head and face.

Let's draw the ear now, so we can find the line for our optics.

This time, we can only meet one ear likewise. Describe an oval shape, where its higher indicate touches the brow line and the lowest, the nose line. Just like we proficient before!

Now but add together the details.

The ear here is done very similarly to when we drew it on a side view.

The eyebrows and ears can be simply drawn like this.

Adjacent is the optics, probably the one people have the almost problems with.

Its line goes right below the brow line, same distance, and place as nosotros did before.

Like in a front view, we describe almond shapes for the eyes.

The eye that is farthest from us is usually a scrap hidden from the nose, then take that into consideration!

The eyes look a bit more slanted in a three quarters view.

Now it's time to depict the olfactory organ.

We can just see one of the nostrils, so the shape here will be a triangle, similar to the i we drew in a side view.

Like I mentioned before, the nose is in front of one of the eyes, so be sure to depict that line on elevation, connecting to the countenance.

The nose is very easy to draw in a three quarters view, a simple slanted triangle.

Finally, nosotros draw the mouth, like to the one in the front view.

An "Thou" shape for the upper lip and an arch for the bottom lip.

The only deviation here is that one of the sides of your lips will appear smaller since a part of the face is turned away from us.

The mouth can be tricky to draw, if you're having trouble, look up photo references!

Looking Up

Every shape is more often than not the same when looking up, the just departure here is that we depict more than biconvex guidelines, especially for the optics.

I'm going to leave here an instance, so it's easier to empathize!

Drawing someone looking up can be pretty fun!

Looking Down

Same as earlier, except that this time, our lines arch in the opposite direction.

Again, let'due south encounter what I mean by this with an example:

When people are looking down, the face features follow the lines!

Different Expressions, Different Face Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression y'all're going for, the face will have different shapes.

For example, if you're drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long "O" for the oral fissure, then the confront will wait more elongated.

On the other hand, if you're cartoon someone aroused, where the optics and eyebrows grow shut together and a closed oral fissure, mayhap showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite effect.

Depending on the expressions your character is making, the face will move accordingly!

Put yourself in front of a mirror and do your expressions.

Accept photos if y'all need to! And then, you lot'll have tons of references for you to utilize in your drawings. If yous prefer, you can even trace on acme of your photos, and then y'all can come across conspicuously the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression y'all're making!

Summing It Up

Uff, that was a lot of learning!

Merely, every bit you tin run into, the important parts y'all need to retain when drawing faces are proportions and shapes.

Once you nail those downwardly, everything else comes easily.

As always, practice a lot. In the beginning, practice only the shapes and guidelines if needed. Later on a few tries, you lot'll see that everything will come up more intuitively.

If you prefer to encounter these steps in video format, check my course on Figure Drawing over on Gumroad. Together, we can become over drawing a face up, different types of ears, mouths, noses, etc, in different views!
